Pros/Cons

The four-part Pros/Cons chart can be a really useful tool for considering all manner of decisions.

  1. What are the benefits I might get from taking this action?

  2. What negative things might come from this action?

  3. What are the benefits I might get from NOT taking this action?

  4. What negative things might come from NOT taking this action?

After filling out a Pros/Cons chart, you might want to consider:

  1. Does any section have more reasons than another?

  2. Which of these thoughts are rational?  Which of these thoughts may not be rational?

  3. Are any of these reasons significantly more important to you than others?  Are any significantly less important to you?

  4. Which action would feel better for you right NOW?  Which action would feel better in the long run?

Sometimes when facing hard decisions it can also help to:

  • Journal

  • Sleep on it

  • Read about other people's experiences

  • Find out other people's opinions

  • Talk to someone about it.  You can talk with someone you know, a counselor/therapist, someone online, or pose a question to others who might have gone through this too.
