What is Self-Harm?

Self-harm is the deliberate injuring of one’s own body as a means to deal with some form of emotional distress (described more here).

Self-harm can take many forms, such as:

  • cutting,

  • burning,

  • picking or scratching at the skin,

  • pulling hair,

  • biting,

  • hitting,

  • breaking bones,

  • inserting objects into the body.

Self-harm is a symptom, not an illness, and therefore points to a deeper emotional struggle and is not the entire issue that needs addressed.
